A charity is looking to clean up after it floated the idea of helping to maintain the appearance of Coventry Canal.
The Living Environment Trust has taken over the management of Fazeley, a specialist clean-up boat owned by British Waterways which is used to clean the stretch of Coventry Canal between Coventry Canal Basin and Hawkesbury Junction.
Fazeley was previously operated by Coventry City Council’s Urban Rangers but the Living Environment Trust offered to take on the running of the boat to help the council reduce costs.
The Living Environment Trust is an environmental charity based in Coventry which aims to promote environmental enhancement and sustainability issues within local communities.
Raffy Tentindo, manager of the Living Environment Trust, said: “Fazeley provides an important service and we wanted to do all we could to help ensure the valuable work it carries out continued.
“The objectives of Fazeley fit in perfectly with our aims and ethos as a charity and so it made perfect sense for us to be involved with this project.
“By operating this service we are making a significant contribution to maintaining and improving the quality and the standard of the environment through the use of volunteers in the local community.”
The boat will run on a weekly basis with one or two members of staff and a group of volunteers and cleans a 5.5 mile stretch of Coventry Canal including the towpath.
