Schools Get Active, a project which aims to get children and families more active in their day to day life, has doubled in size after the number of schools signed up rose from five to ten in the past 12 months.
Coventry Sports Foundation manages and delivers the project which is funded by Physical Activity and Sports Services In Our Neighbourhood (PASSION) and NHS Coventry who are part of the Coventry Health Improvement Programme with Coventry City Council.
The project sees schools provided with a trained sports coach to deliver weekly lunch and after school clubs at no cost to the school or children.
In addition the Schools Get Active programme runs during holiday periods with activities and additional clubs set up to keep children active throughout the school breaks.
Kayle Burgham, programme manager for Coventry Sports Foundation, said: “We try to work with the entire family rather than just children, by running family days, trips and inviting parents to sessions with the aim of encouraging lifestyle changes for the whole family.
“When the project started there were five schools confirmed and throughout the first year we delivered family activity days, summer holiday events and even a family beach trip to Skegness.
“Through the good work and reputation of the project, even more schools approached us to be part of what we were doing and we entered the second year with 10 schools on board and engage 284 children every week – making a real difference to the lives of them and their families.”
