The national Pools for Schools project selected Centre AT7 on Bell Green Road as a home for a temporary 12 metre long swimming pool, which has been installed inside a marquee at the site.
More than 30 primary schools will use the pool to receive coaching and improve their swimming, while adults and children over 11 can use it on evenings and weekends.
Wendy Jackson, community development manager for the centre’s management organisation, Coventry Sports Foundation, said the reaction from the first groups to use the pool was fantastic.
“The kids are loving the pool and responding really well to the coaches – it’s gone even better than we expected,” Mrs Jackson said.
“They are learning so quickly and we’ve already had children who have improved within the course of an hour, both in terms of their confidence in the water and their technical ability.
“It’s so exciting because the children have gone away with a real buzz after their session – and that means they want to come back for more, improve their skill and get important exercise.”
The scheme is a joint project between Cov City Council, School Sports Partnership (Coventry East) and Coventry Sports Foundation.
The pool is accessible to the public and there are changing rooms on site. To find out about the swimming programme, email getactive@covsf.com or contact 024 7666 5530.
