State-of-the-art Pool at Xcel Leisure Centre

Friday 13 August 2010

A Coventry leisure centre is set to build a state-of-the-art short term swimming pool.

Xcel Leisure Centre, of Mitchell Avenue, is constructing the temporary 25-metre pool while essential maintenance work takes place on its current pool for 12 weeks from August 30.

All of the planned 200 classes will go ahead, including swimming classes for 3,500 youngsters from 23 Coventry primary schools.

The heated pool, which is being constructed by Total Swimming, will be built on the centre’s tennis courts and include changing facilities.

Members can still use the existing changing and shower areas, along with the indoor sauna and steam room in the health suite.

Wendy Jackson, Coventry Sports Foundation’s sports development manager, said: “We’re very excited about this pool – no-one has built a pool like this for customers.

“In terms of our swimmers, we’re talking about walking an extra 10 metres down the hall – the quality of the facility remains the same.

“The maintenance work is unavoidable so we wanted to make sure nothing was too different for our customers, and the fact that this is so advanced and unique is very exciting for us.

“We’re expecting a visit from some special members of Team GB to test the pool ant a launch the event, so it’s great to have national recognition for what we’re doing here.”

Coventry Sports Foundation, which manages the Xcel Leisure Centre, was praised by Olympic swimmers Mark Foster and Steve Parry after running the Pools for Schools scheme at its Centre AT7 site in July.

Around 400 children were taught to swim in just two sessions, in a temporary pool set-up in its car park.
