Olympic Stars Make a Splash

Monday 6 September 2010

Olympic stars of the past and future made a splash at a Coventry leisure centre as the new short term pool opened its doors.

Xcel Leisure Centre, of Mitchell Avenue, is constructed the temporary 25-metre pool while essential maintenance work takes place on its current pool for 12 weeks from August 30.

A special launch event took place on Monday, September 6 from 11am until 2pm and was attended by former British Olympic swimmer Duncan Goodhew, Team GB freestyle swimmer Jo Jackson and members of the Great Britain synchronised swimming team and water polo team.

There were around 60 youngsters aged between eight and 13-years-old taking part in free swimming workshops on the day.

Wendy Jackson, Coventry Sports Foundation’s sports development manager, said: “We were delighted to be given the opportunity to have a temporary facility of this quality as it will allow for minimum disruption to our members.”

The heated pool, was constructed by Total Swimming and sponsored by British Gas, is built on the centre’s tennis courts and includes changing facilities.

Members can still use the existing changing and shower areas, along with the indoor sauna and steam room in the health suite.
