Whilst the Sports Development team have worked extensively with governing bodies and education agencies to ensure that the session content is consistent with National Curriculum requirements, the PEPS programme is still underpinned by the six founding objectives that focus on strengthening communities by:
1.Breaking down barriers that children have towards sport, physical activity and large community facilities.
2.Ensuring that children’s earliest experiences of sport and physical activity are positive and rewarding.
3.Contributing to the development of important life skills, confidence and self belief.
4.Encouraging a sense of community ownership and belonging.
5.Presenting sport and physical activity to children as an option so that they are better placed to make informed choices.
6. Introducing children to the habit of exercise at an early age in order that they understand the health and lifestyle benefits.
The Sports Development team have worked alongside the School Sports Partnership to ensure that all of the coaching units have been designed to meet the expectations of Best Coaching Practice.
The six coaching units delivered each year are selected from:
• Netball
• Indoor Athletics
• Mini Rugby
• Dance and Movement
• Swimming
• Striking & Fielding
• Outdoor Activities
• Gymnastics
The programme delivers one hour coaching sessions to over forty Primary Schools every week, including eight schools that cater for children with special educational needs.
The main features of the programme are:
• Coaching for Key Stage 2 children – Years 5 and 6
• Facility based sessions – The Alan Higgs Centre; Centre AT7; The Midland Sports Centre
• Class teacher involvement
• Weekly presentation of Fair Play awards
• Coaching unit certification for every child
• Inter school tournaments and festivals
Get Kids Active has been introduced by the Sports Development team to ensure that the facility based PEPS experience is extended into the school environment.
The main features of Get Kids Active are:
• Targets Key Stage 1 children
• Sessions delivered by PEPS coaches in the schools
• Groups specifically selected by class teachers
• Encourages physical activity rather than sports coaching
• Breakfast; lunch time; after school sessions
• Tackling childhood obesity
• Overcoming inhibition to improve confidence and self esteem
