The Living Environment Trust is an environmental charity based in Coventry. The aim of the Trust is to promote environmental enhancement and sustainability issues within local communities, as a means of engaging and involving people in a range of experiences that will expand their own understanding of environmental issues and improve their neighbourhoods.
Accordingly, the Trust uses the restoration of neglected green spaces as a way to engage disaffected community groups, whilst also serving to enhance and expand the existing biodiversity and create important community and educational resources.
Based at The Alan Higgs Centre, the Living Environment Trust focuses on four main areas of service delivery:
The Trust provides a wide range of professional services associated with environmental management, including green space planning and the restoration of neglected open spaces, protected species surveying and the implementation of Environmental Management Systems within businesses to meet the accreditation criteria for ISI 14001.
The Trust delivers a range of informal and semi-informal environmental programmes including educational packages in schools, holiday activities and children’s ‘green parties’ as a means of promoting a greater awareness and understanding of environmental issues from an early age. Many of the educational sessions are delivered ‘in the field’ whilst the Trust is working in areas of environmental management, so that the educational experiences are drawn from practical engagement.
The Trust places a significant emphasis on the value of community partnershjips and engaging local people both consultatively and practically in the delivery of community based environmental projects. This approach ensures that communities develop a sense of ownership that will prevent such improvements from being vandalized or neglected in the future.
The Coventrian Narrowboat was donated to the Trust in 2008 and presents a unique opportunity to engage community groups and children with an important source of environmental and heritage interest such as is contained within the canal networks. The Coventrian is also available for private hire to cater for a range of social and corporate functions.
