Coventry Sports Foundation is proud to deliver a project which has been created to inspire children in the build up to the London Olympics 2012, give them the opportunity to play some Olympic sports and raise the awareness of the Olympic and Paralympic values. This project has been awarded the Inspired by 2012 Mark by the Olympic committee.

The project starts in September 2011 and will run until July 2012 engaging with over 1500 children over the year. We will be working with around 27 Primary schools across Coventry: experienced sports coaches will be going into schools or coming into the Xcel Leisure, Centre AT7 or The Alan Higgs Centre for National Curriculum PE delivery. Throughout the year the sports coaches will be delivering 6 different Olympic Sports, at the end of every unit of work the children will get the chance to compete in an end of term mini festival at their school. This gives children the opportunity to try various Olympic sports and we hope to inspire and encourage them to get involved in the Olympics. At the end of each festival three children will be awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate for achievements during that competition.

We believe the Olympic and Paralympic Values are as important in day to day life as they are in a sporting setting. To encourage and reinforce these Values at the end of every session a child will be awarded with an Olympic & Paralympic Value certificate for showing one of the Olympic or Paralympic values during that session, upon receiving their award the sport coach will explain to the group why the certificate is being given, which Olympic or Paralympic value it is for and why this is important. The Values are Respect, Friendship, Equality, Excellence, Courage, Determination and Inspiration.

Every school at the beginning of the project will be given a Country which they will represent throughout the year. During the end of unit festivals each school will try to gain points for their country, these points get recorded into the Coventry Schools Challenge table and schools will be competing to achieve the most points over the year. At the end of the year we will have a final table with a winning school/ country just like the Olympics final medals table.

By delivering this project we are hoping to inspire more young people to become involved with the Olympics, give them a better understanding of the sports and promote the Olympic values.
